Giant squid, Architeuthis dux was collected by Dr. Tsunami Kubodera from the National Museum of Natural History in Japan. The specimen was then brought into Tokyo University Medical School for an MRI scan by Dr. Mitsunaga Narushima. The data was processed by Dr. Shuichi Shigeno from JAMSTEC. The visualized images are processed in 3D and printed at UMD Natural Resources Research Institute. The printed squid was brought back to Japan to a traditional Japanese craftsman Mr. Sugawara who applied lacquer to the squid. This model is the only existing 3D printed giant squid created from MRI scan in the world.
